Nursing Mothers Theophylline is excreted into breast milk and may cause irritability or other signs of mild toxicity in nursing human infants. The concentration of theophylline in breast milk is about equivalent to the maternal serum concentration. When theophylline is given as an oral sustained-release product, timing of nursing with respect to the dose is of little or no benefit.
