Dexpanthenol or provitamin B5 have been applied to the nipple to treat and prevent pain and various problems related to the nipple, comparing it with other products, without being better than others (Shanazi 2015, Morland-Schultz 2005, Kuşcu 2002) or better than no treatment (Morland-Schultz 2005). The best prevention and treatment for problems in the nipple is a suitable latching technique (Morland-Schultz 2005). If it is applied to the chest or nipple, it should be cleaned before the next feed. Cases have been reported of contact dermatitis and anaphylaxis due to topical or oral use of dexpanthenol (Gulec 2015, Chin 2013, Röckmann 2005). Panthenol in the body is metabolized to pantothenic acid or Vitamin B5.
